The intervention consisted in the interior refurbishment of a family house in Esplugues de Llobregat, Barcelona. The design strives to improve the spatial relationships within the house while integrating the new elements with the existing ones. Rather than contrasting and distinguishing the new from the old, the intervention takes cues from the language and materiality of the existing architecture, prioritising continuity and coherence. The brown marble used in the existing pavements of the common areas is extended into the kitchen while the only new materials introduced are the cream coloured quartzite stone used for countertops and the off-white panelling for the built-in furniture. Both of these materials were selected in conjunction with the existing material palette.
A large opening connects the new kitchen with the living space, fostering social interactions between the two spaces while maintaining a separate identity and functionality. The kitchen layout responds to the constraints of the structure and setbacks of the space, defining different areas for preparing food, cooking, and cleaning. For the refurbishment of the bathrooms and bedrooms, the same approach of material and spatial continuity was followed.
